MakeMyMove Now Helping Teachers, Police & Healthcare Workers Find Relocation Bonus Offers Throughout the U.S.

The Jackson Police Department is offering a signing bonus up to $10,000.

Since the pandemic created millions of remote corporate workers, communities have been trying to lure them - along with their high pay and families - to relocate. Buoyed by that success, many have asked to expand the recruitment pool to include incentives for other in-demand professionals like teachers, police, and nurses.

“Let’s do it!” was the response from MakeMyMove, the nation's first and only marketplace that matches remote workers to communities across the country offering relocation incentives. It’s a new way for communities to grow their economies by recruiting individuals who can bring their jobs with them, rather than only focusing on luring companies to relocate factories and other businesses.

“We help cities across America grow by attracting talent,” said MakeMyMove Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Evan Hock. “Remote worker recruitment works so well, communities have begun expanding their programs to address other talent gaps, adding incentives for remote workers who bring spouses or partners who are teachers or nurses. At the same time, we’re seeing nurses, teachers, and emergency responders spending more time on our website. It made perfect sense to expand the marketplace to address the need.”

The Jackson, Mich., Police Department is one of the communities offering incentives. In Jackson, police officers who relocate can earn $20,000 signing bonuses along with other perks including, potentially, help with a new home. Through the city’s 100 Homes Program, movers can buy newly built homes within the city and receive $25,000 down-payment assistance per home. Applicants are also encouraged to apply for an additional $10,000 of down payment assistance through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

"Like the rest of the country, The City of Jackson is facing real challenges in recruiting law enforcement officers," said Aaron Dimick, Jackson’s city public information officer. "We're pulling out all the stops to ensure we're attracting the quality and experienced candidates that will ensure safety and build positive relationships with the community."

More than 2,000 people working in education, healthcare and law enforcement have already signed up to MakeMyMove hoping to find relocation recruitment offers. Hock says he expects that to grow quickly as the word gets out and communities see the additional opportunity.

To be eligible for recruitment offers on MakeMyMove, most programs require potential movers to earn salaries of $50,000 or more, be willing to relocate and remain in their new community for at least a year. Tens of thousands of potential movers have applied for incentives on makemymove.com this year alone.

“Who wouldn’t want to help teachers, nurses and first responders find their forever homes in communities where their hard work and sacrifice will be truly appreciated?” Hock asked. “We are thrilled to be able to do this.”

Examples of the current incentive offers targeting teachers, police, and healthcare workers on the MakeMyMove platform

  • Muskegon, Michigan teachers - get $10k and summers off on the lake!

  • Oklahoma Public Schools are paying bonuses of up to $50,000 for new teachers.

  • The Alameda, California Police Department will pay bonuses of up to $75,000 for police officers -the highest offer we're aware of for any incentive anywhere.

  • Roseville Minnesota police officers - get a signing bonus and up to six weeks paid parental leave with an ease-back-to-work provision allowing employees to work a reduced schedule.

  • Baltimore Police Department is offering a $5,000 signing bonus and also $1,000/mo toward housing if you move into the city.

  • Registered nurses who join M Fairview Health at the University of Minnesota Medical Center can get a $50,000 signing bonus.

  • Signing bonuses for registered nurses who move to Arcadia, California top out at $40,000.

  • St. Luke’s University Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was named a Top Workplace in 2023 and was the third-highest ranked healthcare entity in the nation to be deemed a Top Workplace. It’s offering registered nurse signing bonuses up to $30,000.

Bonuses have long been a tool specific industries have used when faced with periods of high demand and low supply of people to fill them. But those offers fluctuated over time, have been dispersed throughout the country and have been difficult to find. MakeMyMove’s marketplace puts those offers in one place to help people shop for jobs in the places they want to live anyway.
