Sheridan County is located in Northwest Kansas, two counties south of the Nebraska border (about 45 minutes) and three counties east of the Colorado border (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Sheridan County is named for Civil War General Phillip H. Sheridan. The Kansas Legislature created the county in 1873. While settlements began in the 1860s, it was not until they experienced an influx of settlers in the late 1870s that led to official organization on June 5, 1880. Kenneth was the county seat until 1886 when the railroad went through Hoxie instead of Kenneth. Kenneth was moved to Hoxie and the county seat became Hoxie. The Union Pacific Railroad’s arrival in the late 1880s caused major economic benefits to the area. 

Sheridan County is home to two primary cities: Hoxie and Selden. Additional townships within the county include Angelus, Seguin, and Studley. The county boast several scenic sites including the Sheridan State Fishing Lake and the historic Cottonwood Ranch in nearby Studley. History buffs will enjoy learning about local history at the Sheridan County Historical Society and Mickey's Museum in Hoxie. Recreational amenities include five parks in Hoxie and the City Park in Selden. The Hoxie Ball Diamonds are home to recreational activities for all ages such as baseball, softball, and even soccer. For a day on the links, hit up the beautifully manicured 9-Hole Hoxie Golf Course, or cool off at the Hoxie Swimming Pool during the long days of summer. 

One of the most popular events in Hoxie is the annual Sheridan County Fair and Carnival held each July. Thousands of people come from all over the area and beyond to enjoy the 

three-day, home-owned carnival which has been volunteer-run for more than 40 years!

 The Hoxie Rod Run is the third Saturday of every June and is a day dedicated to shiny cars, contests, and a show stopping drag race at the airport. Selden's annual 4th of July fireworks show rivals any in the area and is always a popular way to celebrate the nation's independence! Hoxie's Winterfest event helps ring in the holiday spirit with business open houses, yummy treats, carriage rides and prizes. Rec activities are scheduled year-round for youth and adults to enjoy, and the Main Street Arts Council's music and arts events round out a busy calendar of activities with their cultural offerings. 

A good restaurant isn't hard to find in Sheridan County with a number of options to fulfill a variety of tastes, and are all locally owned! Oscar's coffee shop offers drinks and breakfast treats for those needing a quick and tasty bite. You can enjoy casual, comfort food at JD's and The Hitchin' Post. The Elephant Bistro & Bar in Hoxie is one of the most well-known restaurants in the region, is unlike anything in northwest Kansas. Their menu features unique dishes from different cultures prepared with locally produced ingredients. Selden's Midway Cafe is known for its pizza and Aunt Shannon's offers delicious down-home cooking for residents and visitors alike.

Smith County, Kansas, is in the geographic center of the contiguous United States. The communities of Smith Center, Kensington, Lebanon, Gaylord, and Athol offer rural, small town living with several churches and community activities. The landscape includes many majestic Cottonwood trees, which is the state tree of Kansas. Residents can also enjoy of the rich diversity of wildlife, birds, and plants, including deer, turkey and even the occasional elk. In the northwest part of the county, you can visit the cabin constructed in 1872 by Dr. Brewster Higley on the bank of the West Beaver Creek. There Dr. Higley wrote a poem titled “The Western Home,” which was set to music by Dan Kelley; the song “Home on the Range” is the state song of Kansas.
