Plainfield : FUN FACT
Plainfield has an interesting brush with presidential history (and mud!). Back in 1842, former President Martin Van Buren was a passenger on a stagecoach traveling on the National Road, which runs through Plainfield as Main Street today. As the story goes, Van Buren had previously vetoed a bill for improving the National Road, angering many settlers. During his trip through Plainfield, the stagecoach was deliberately tipped into a particularly muddy section of the road, giving Van Buren a rather unceremonious – and very muddy – welcome! This incident cemented Plainfield's place along the National Road.
