Tulsa has emerged as a national leader in attracting and retaining remote workers thanks to its innovative Tulsa Remote program. Launched in 2018, the initiative has established Tulsa as more than just a relocation destination— Tulsa Remote has created a diverse, vibrant community of over 3,500 remote workers that fosters long-term connections. With 90% of all members choosing to stay in Tulsa past their one-year commitment, Tulsa Remote proves that a strategic, people-first approach can turn a relocation incentive into a long-term success story.
Unlike traditional incentive programs that focus solely on financial perks, Tulsa Remote places a strong emphasis on integration and belonging. Justin Harlan, Managing Director of Tulsa Remote, highlights this approach: “From the start, we saw the potential for collaboration because both Tulsa Remote and Make My Move were committed to helping people explore cities beyond the traditional coastal hubs—places where remote workers could build meaningful careers and fulfilling lives.”
Tulsa Remote’s partnership with MakeMyMove has expanded the program’s reach, helping remote professionals discover the city’s unique blend of affordability, opportunity, and welcoming culture. Tulsa has positioned itself as an accessible, mid-sized city that offers remote professionals a high quality of life —making it an appealing choice for those seeking opportunities beyond coastal hubs.

Attracting new residents is only the beginning. What sets Tulsa Remote apart is its intentional focus on ensuring that every participant feels supported throughout their transition. “We keep potential movers engaged through touchpoints that provide them the opportunity to learn more about Tulsa and the program,” explains Harlan. “Throughout the application process, we encourage them to reach out with questions and connect them with the right team member—whether it’s our Onboarding Team and Housing Support Manager, Recruitment Manager, or one of our Recruitment Coordinators— we ensure they receive personalized guidance at every step.”
One of the most successful touchpoints we offer is the Hosted Visit, where program finalists are invited to Tulsa to experience the city firsthand. These visits allow prospective movers to meet current Tulsa Remote members, explore the community, and envision what life in Tulsa could look like for them.

More than just a relocation incentive, Tulsa Remote is a gateway to a vibrant community. Once a member relocates, they’re paired with a Member Integration Specialist who helps them settle in, find resources, and build their local network. “The support Member Integration Specialists provide our members is key to helping individuals feel engaged and welcomed into the community as they begin to plant roots in Tulsa,” says Harlan.
To further facilitate connections, members receive three years of free access to Gradient, Tulsa’s Innovation Hub and premier coworking space, designed with remote workers in mind. Their time at Gradient not only fosters professional growth but also encourages collaboration among other remote workers and local Tulsans. Additionally, Tulsa Remote offers a robust calendar of networking events, meetups, and social opportunities which ensures new residents quickly find their place within the community.
Amanda Hanus, a Tulsa Remote member, shares her experience: “Moving to Tulsa through Tulsa Remote has been life-changing for us. We were searching for a place where we could build a more meaningful life, and from the moment we visited, we knew this was home. Tulsa has given us the space to explore our passions like volunteering and diving into new hobbies like gardening and singing jazz. But more than anything, it’s the people we’ve met who make this city special. We’ve found a true sense of community here, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”
With 90% of members choosing to stay in Tulsa beyond their program year, Tulsa Remote proves that the city isn’t just a temporary stop but a place where people put down roots. More than 600 members have purchased homes, a clear indicator of their long-term investment in the community.
As one Tulsa Remote member succinctly put it: “The $10K is what piqued my interest and made me apply, the Hosted Visit is what made my decision to move, and the community is what made me want to stay.” While the financial incentive grabs attention, it’s the deep sense of belonging that convinces people to stay.

Beyond financial incentives, Tulsa’s investment in public spaces, arts, culture, and local initiatives has made it a city where people don’t just move—they build meaningful lives. Amenities like the Gathering Place, a thriving arts scene featuring the Tulsa Ballet and Tulsa Opera, and a growing live music and award-winning food culture all contribute to the city’s vibrancy.

Tulsa's success offers a blueprint for other cities looking to attract and retain talent as the future of work continues to evolve. Instead of relying solely on economic incentives, cities can create welcoming environments by investing in public spaces, supporting local businesses, and fostering community engagement.
Tulsa’s story proves that when cities prioritize people over policies, they become places where newcomers don’t just arrive—they thrive.
